About Ledger Lane
Ledger Lane is the content side of Ledger Lane Templates, a small studio that makes spreadsheet templates for landlords, freelancers and online sellers. This site is for the person who owns one to ten rental units, manages them alongside a day job, and wants the money side to be boring in the best way: rent recorded, receipts findable, reserves funded, and tax season handled in an afternoon instead of a lost weekend.
Who writes this
The guides are written and maintained by the Ledger Lane team, with an operations and finance background: reconciliations, month-end close, inventory and process checklists. We approach rentals the way an operations person approaches any small business. Write the process down, keep one source of truth, and make the next step obvious.
We are not attorneys, CPAs or financial advisers, and nothing here is tax, legal or investment advice. When a topic touches taxes or landlord-tenant law, we link to the primary source (usually irs.gov, the FTC or HUD) and tell you when it’s time to ask a professional.
What you’ll find here
- Record-keeping systems that hold up at tax time: categories, folder structures, and monthly routines.
- Process guides for the recurring jobs: screening tenants, inspections, deposits, collecting rent.
- Tool comparisons based on published features and pricing pages, with the date we checked them.
- Checklists you can print or copy.
How we choose what to recommend
- Problem first. We start from a recurring landlord task and ask what makes it faster or less error-prone. Sometimes the answer is software. Sometimes it’s a $10 label maker, and sometimes it’s a habit.
- Free options get equal billing. Where a free tool or a plain spreadsheet does the job, we say so, even when a paid option pays us a commission.
- No invented numbers. We don’t publish made-up ratings, test scores or prices. Software prices are quoted from the vendor’s own pricing page with a “checked on” date. Amazon prices aren’t listed at all because they change constantly.
- Physical products are recommended as categories with widely sold, established brands as examples, plus what to check before you buy. We say so when we haven’t personally tested a specific model.
Some links earn us a commission. See the affiliate disclosure for exactly how that works. We also sell our own templates. When we mention them, we label them as ours.
